Helpful Tips for Surviving Prague's Grouchy Folks :)

FINANCIAL TIPS

    • Use your Visa card whenever you can instead of cash. You will get the lowest currency rate by using your Visa.

    • Get cash out of ATM's, don't exchange your cash - always a rip off! Make sure you tell your bank you're going to travel overseas before-hand.

    • TIPPING!!! DON'T TIP 20% like here!!! It's more like 5% for bad service and 10% for good service.

WEIRD CZECH THINGS

  • Czech retail folks are just plain rude. Don't take it personally; they're just bitter at the onslaught of tourists that never existed prior to the Velvet Revolution. Younger folks are nicer. Swindlers and pickpockets are everywhere!!! 👺

  • This page has helpful quick Czech phrases - or download the Duolingo app that teaches basic Czech.

  • ICE 🧊 - they don't give you much ice in your drinks, so ask for more. I hope to God that's gotten better these days.

  • Ask specifically what type of drink you want, if you say 'soda' they'll give you plain bubbly seltzer which they call 'water with gas'. You gotta say 'Coke' or 'Pepsi' with ice.

  • Pubs 🍺 serve the best 'real' Czech food. Restaurants around Prague have tweaked their menus for the tourists, so I don't even know what to call that cuisine; it's like Italian mixed w/ German mixed w/ Greek. Czech food is all about sauces, dumplings and meat. Best bread and pastries on Earth are Czech. Even the grocery stores have amazing baked goods. Rohliky are mini baguettes that taste outta this world!

  • My Czech Republic has been a good guide site for all things Czech.
